
How can we adapt to climate change?




It’s a changing world, and a lot of that is down to us, the humble homo sapiens. Our researchers will tell you how we can protect our coasts against flooding and how declining hippo populations are affecting the functioning of African lake systems and coastal areas. It’s not the end of the world as we know it - we’ve hopefully got some solutions!

Climate change will result in accelerated sea level rises worldwide and the first to be affected will be the coasts, which are home to the majority of the Earth’s population. We are working on developing new ways of safeguarding against coastal flooding, to develop a ‘healthier’ and more sustainable coast that is biodiverse and supports socio-economic activities. How will we do this? Come and find out.

There is more to global change than climate change. Humans are interfering with the environment in many ways: e.g. over-fertilisation and eutrophication, hunting, biodiversity loss, river embankment or habitat fragmentation. We will show you how all these aspects come together in a new study that shows that declining hippo populations have had strong effects on the functioning of African lake systems and coastal areas. You will never look at hippos again with the same eyes!
