What data protection can do for you: Learning to appreciate the General Data Protection Regulation
Laura Drechsler
PhD Researcher
Personal data are all around us. Within the European Union (EU), the law has recognized that the use of personal data creates problems, and therefore offers protection, for example via the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The GDPR is however often considered as tedious and difficult. In my talk I want to demonstrate that the GDPR offers important protection to our constitutional rights, while also giving us options to take back control of our personal data.

The Mythical Mr. Average: a tale of personal data and information accessibility
Olga Gkotsopoulou
PhD Researcher
Data protection notices and cookie banners accompany digital products, apps and services we use every day. Most people quickly skim through and click ‘I agree’ or ‘Next’. But do you ever wonder what you just agreed to? Information provided in this context is crucial to help us make informed decisions about our personal data, but is often regarded as obscure, difficult to understand and rarely in line with accessibility requirements. In this talk, we are going to discuss information accessibility as prerequisite for transparency to allow us exercise our rights at an equal and inclusive manner.
