We are teaming up with the European Training Network "ASCTN-Training" to bring you a very special event about the brain. You use it all the time (we assume), yet how much do you know about it? How it grows, and how it remains functional over the years... until it doesn't? "ASCTN-Training" is funded by the EU's Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme and brings together a team of young researchers determined to unravel the workings of the brain and help develop treatment of neurological disorders such as Parkinson's or Huntington's. Oh, and did we mention the first 70 participants get a free drink? First come first served. Literally!

Can we get a peek into our brain as it develops? Is it fact or fiction? Brain organoids or “mini-brains” have recently come into existence, but are they actual, tiny brains in a dish or just clumps of brain cells in a tube? These questions are not so easy to answer, even for scientists. So come join me as I show you how to make these little brains, and let’s find out if they really are what pop science claims them to be!

The brain: does size matter?

Did you know that a single stem cell can create all our organs, including the brain? Even after we are born, some of these stem cells occupy specific locations within the brain and continue to make new brain cells. Unfortunately, as we grow old, this “brain cells factory” slows down dramatically. But what if I told you that there was a way to beat the odds and convince the stem cells to keep making more neurons? Here's a clue - it has something to do with the processes of learning & memory formation. Grab a drink, hold on to your seat, and let’s dive into the world of behavioural neuroscience research!
