Geography, Games & Life Chances
From remote villages to global markets, outcomes depend on both place and behaviour. See how mapping reveals hidden health inequalities across Africa, and how game theory explains why “rational” choices can backfire. Discover how smarter coordination can lead to better results for everyone.

Where you live could save or cost your life. But how does your residential address determine your health?
Maps uncover the hidden geography of health. They show where women travel hours to reach a facility to give birth, where communities are vulnerable to disease, and where too many children die before their fifth birthday.
Join Peter on a journey across Africa to see how he uses geospatial data study how location determines whether the odds of survival are stacked against you and how this help us identify and reach those most left behind Geography shapes your chances from the moment you are born, its destiny.

When individual wins become collective losses. What is the catch?

What do traffic congestion, antibiotic resistance, and the overfishing of tuna have in common? When making decisions, individuals often choose strategies that seem most beneficial to themselves. These choices can, however, unintentionally degrade overall system performance and, ultimately, harm individual outcomes.
In this talk, we explore how fundamental concepts from game theory help explain why such situations arise and how harmful behaviour can be avoided. We apply these insights to supply chains, showing how companies (potentially competitors) can achieve better alignment, strengthen collaboration, and thereby seize synergies that improve both individual and collective results.
