If you have drunk sports drinks, you have likely read on the label the name of some electrolytes such as sodium chloride, sodium citrate, or monopotassium phosphate. Such electrolytes have to cross the cell membrane to reach the cell, and there are specialized protein channels to do this job. However, sometimes those proteins do not work correctly, causing channelopathies diseases. For instance, cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder mainly affecting the lungs caused by the dysfunction in the transport of chloride ions. In this talk, we will learn about the design and use of artificial transporters made to mimic the function of proteins.
